I chose trees as the subject for a painting series shortly after my move to St. Louis. Moving up here from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas had an enormous visual impact on me. The complements and contrasts between the redbrick urban landscape and sporadic green spaces caught my attention immediately. The trees in the city appear to have a symbiotic relationship with the buildings and alleys, the sidewalks and power lines - a very different relationship from my Arkansas home where nature is the clear victor over anything manmade. These urban trees are usually growing singularly and widely-spaced from one another making it easier to appreciate their individual attributes. After a year and a half I have painted, photographed, sketched, and even climbed dozens of trees around the Saint Louis area and I feel I am just beginning to do some small justice to these intrepid icons. -josephine romo
